Welcome one, welcome all!

We bring to you once again the list of hot songs released on a monthly basis and this month we have a total of 24 songs that made the cut. A total of 328 contents were posted with about 160 being new music for our consumption.

Without wasting much time, let’s get down to it. Below is our carefully compiled list of 24 hot songs that were released in May 2016 and in no particular order.

 

 

Burna boy – Acting Bad ft. Cynthia Morgan

Burna Boy was involved in some drama this past month, having to deal with baby mama issues and off course the leaking of this song ‘Acting Bad’ which had 3 different versions with 2 different artistes. This version with Cynthia Morgan was the most popular and makes it to our list of hot songs released in May. Enjoy.

 

Sean Tizzle – Like to Party

Sean Tizzle had a super hot month in terms of released and features. The singer seems to have found his groove back with this new song ‘Like to Party‘. Enjoy!

 

 

Illbliss ft Falz – Ayakata

Oga boss and Falz seem to have a good working relationship of recent, with them hanging out and featuring on each others song and video. iLLBlisS released Ayakata featuring Falz & Sess which was a instant hit amongst rap fans.

 

Temmie Ovwasa – Jabole

YBNL unveiled its first ever female signee Temmie Ovwasa with her debut single ‘Jabole’ produced by Pheelz. With backing from YBNL’s boss Olamide and other artistes on the label and affilates, Temmie’s song has garnered over 28,000 downloads so far on our platform and a lot of radio play in its first month of release. 10 Nigerian Songs I Can’t Stop Listening To (Vol. 3)

In 2015, we started a series here on NJO called “10 Nigerian Songs I Can’t Stop Listening To” (See Vol. 1 and Vol. 2), covering songs we really really liked, but were not necessarily hit songs. Our focus in this section was, and still is, mostly on special songs from up & coming acts as well as “sleeper-hits” from the relatively more recognizable names.

In a nutshell, don’t expect to see Wizkid‘s latest single or Davido‘s smash hit here. However, you’re guaranteed to listen to good music.

So, let’s get right into it. Here’s the 3rd installment of 10 Nigerian Songs I Can’t Stop Listening To!

Acetune ft. Vector – Green Light

I slept on this tune for the longest time till I finally discovered it while randomly checking out old emails. Very groovy tune.

 

Mystro – Awele

Mystro never puts a foot wrong when it comes to singing or beatmaking. This is beautiful.

 

Aramide ft. Adekunle Gold – Love Me

Perfect wedding song from Headies 2015 winners Aramide and Adekunle Gold.

 

Ranti – Iwe Kiko

If you grew up in the South-West, you automatically know the nursery rhyme “Iwe Kiko“. Fantastic modern-day rendition.

 

Nonso – Tonight

Here’s a slow-burner that’s sorta picked up some steam among a small section of Naija music listeners, primarily in the diaspora in 2016, even though the song dropped last year.

“While signed to Chocolate City, the highly rated 23-year-old artist and songwriter was preparing the release of his first body of work, the Childish EP, which never dropped.

Instead of Childish, Milli has released Don’t Ask Me What Happened today, an EP with seven tracks, five new ones in addition to “Unlooking Uncensored” and “Animals After Dark”. 

Don’t Ask Me What Happened is distinctly New School. The EP features some strong Hip-Hop and some dark Rap, alongside tracks that include more lofty R&B vibes; but it’s Milli’s signature Trap-influenced New School sound that is the key common denominator across all songs. 

While Don’t Ask Me What Happened is Milli’s artistic way of getting over the label break-up and coming to terms with the industry, don’t expect any bashings or tell-all songs, however. Rather, Milli’s EP is setting out to make a point that there is an emerging New School sound in Nigeria, and that the versatile singer, rapper, co-producer and leader of the Up Next Movement is truly about setting his Art free, without wanting to be limited to one particular genre. 

Milli is featuring the 20-year-old PatricKxxLee on two tracks, the up and coming Zambian rapper and producer, who many refer to as “Africa’s Travis Scott”, and who is also the main producer of the Don’t Ask Me What Happened EP. Apart from “Unlooking Uncensored”, which was produced by CKay and Reinhard, the EP also features an opening and a closing track produced by Surulere beatmaker Beats By Jayy. “
